Ron Maples to be Recommended Next UT Treasurer

Ron Maples, longtime administrator, controller and interim treasurer, has been selected to serve as permanent treasurer, reporting to the chief financial officer. UT President Joe DiPietro will make the recommendation to the UT Board of Trustees for approval at its meeting March 28-29 in Chattanooga.

Maples has been a University employee for 40 years. His service began with 10 years in internal audit, where he began as a staff auditor and left as director. He served for three years as bursar for UT Knoxville and for 26 years in the controller’s office for which he was named controller in 1990. In 2001, he was part of the IRIS/ SAP project team that implemented the University’s enterprise resource planning system. In 2010, Maples also became part of the chief financial officer’s team, overseeing the UT System budget function. In January 2016, he was named interim treasurer and chief financial officer (CFO) following the retirement of Butch Peccolo. Maples served in that capacity for approximately one year while a national search was conducted for the CFO position.

Maples earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from UT Knoxville in 1974. He obtained the designations of certified public accountant in 1979 and certified internal auditor in 1982.

Maples has been the University’s primary representative to the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) since 1990 and served on the COGR Board from 2008-2014. He was COGR treasurer from 2010 to 2014 and on the COGR costing committee from 2005 to 2014. He served as assistant treasurer for the University’s development foundation and research foundation.

He also serves on several University committees including the president’s strategic plan steering committee, the 2010 presidential search committee and chaired both the strategic plan fiscal policy committee and the uniform guidance policy committee. Maples was a member of the UT-Battelle bid team that in 2000 won the U.S. Department of Energy’s contract to manage Oak Ridge National Laboratory and he served as a member of the transition team in the University assuming its role as lab co-manager.

Maples is a past president of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and, he is a past board member of the UT Federal Credit Union.

Maples is a Knoxville native and active in his local church. He is married to the former Susan C. Hagerman of Knoxville, a 1976 graduate of the UT Knoxville College of Nursing. Their three children, Aaron, Julie and Marly, all are UT alumni, and the family also includes three grandchildren.
