UT Continuing Education Course for Dental Assistants to be offered in Kingsport in September

KINGSPORT — The University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Dentistry will offer a continuing education course for dental assistants at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education in downtown Kingsport on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012.

Participants will be taught to successfully monitor the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia in a private dental practice. The six-hour course will be offered as a live video conference at the Kingsport Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT.

The course will provide a review of basic physiology, information on patient evaluation for the use of nitrous oxide, a discussion of the role of nitrous oxide in dental practice, a review of new equipment and techniques and an overview of the indications and contraindications for using nitrous oxide.

Course cost is $149 per participant, and applications must be received by Sept. 14. Space is limited.

Applicants must be registered dental assistants in Tennessee prior to applying for the course. Those already certified in nitrous oxide monitoring will earn six hours of continuing education credits upon completion of the course. Non-certified dental assistants may receive certification upon successful completion of the examination administered at the end of the course.

J.S. Covington, professor of biologic and diagnostic sciences in UT’s College of Dentistry, will lead the training. He also is professor and chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene in the College of Allied Health Sciences.
