The University of Tennessee’s supercomputer, Kraken, has broken a major barrier to become the world’s first academic supercomputer to enter the petascale, performing more than 1 thousand trillion operations per second, a landmark achievement.
The University of Tennessee (UT) will receive $10 million from the National Science Foundation over four years to establish a new, state-of-the-art visualization and data analysis center aimed at interpreting the massive amounts of data produced by today’s most powerful supercomputers.

Hershel P. Wall, MD, chancellor of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), announced plans today to step down from his position on September 30. Dr. Wall has been a member of the Health Science Center team since he began medical school on the Memphis campus more than 52 years ago.
