Responding to the challenge from national and state leaders to increase and encourage more innovation, the University of Tennessee helped establish nine startup companies based on technology developed by UT faculty over the last fiscal year, more than doubling the total from a year ago.
Thomas Zacharia, who helped the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory partnership achieve world leadership in supercomputing, is leaving his post as deputy director for science and technology at the lab to head research efforts for the Qatar Foundation, lab director Thom Mason announced Wednesday.

The Tennessee Solar Institute (TSI) completed its highly successful Solar Installation Grant Program last week. With more than 6.7 megawatts of commercial solar projects installed in less than two years, TSI has helped boost Tennessee’s ranking nationally in the production of solar energy, from 20th in 2010 to 15th by the end of 2011, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association.
J. Daniel Stewart, associate vice president for research at the University of Tennessee, has been inducted into the College of Engineering Hall of Fame at Georgia Tech, his alma mater.
